2nd Chance
The sky receded rapidly
relentless pain pounding inside my chest
lungs bursting unable to breathe
fear piercing the eyes of medics
then blackness
Awakened by the miracle of modern medicine
engulfed by the love of those most dear
death was cheated that day
a second chance was granted
The days have now lengthened and my focus has shortened
I watch a Turkey buzzard cutting lazy circles in the sky
opening gaping holes of black space shining through
I trudge through green fields
each blade of grass slowing my stride
like a millipede's leg opposing my motion
I wonder whether I will ever dance again on moonlit waters
or soar through the mountains like the eagle
Part of my soul was taken that day…
Silently I await the promise of a new melody
untangled, resonant and clear
